Welcome to Sua Sponte, a blog by GW Law students.  This is a space where law students - mostly 1Ls - write about whatever gets us excited: politics, news, sports, culture, life, and of course the law.  We love discussion, so please leave comments!  If you are a GW Law student or faculty member and you’d like to contribute to the blog, please email sjahann AT gwu.law.edu

Meet the 2008 Sua Sponte team:

Adam Alba is a scared Utah-boy who thinks the slush they call “snow” on the East Coast is more appropriate for ice-skating than for skiing.  During his first year of law school, Adam has become a fine master of Spider Solitaire and Freecell.  When he’s not busy laboring through thick casebooks, Adam loves to hang out with his darling wife, Andrea.  He sometimes blogs about Utah, Mormonism, Politics, Philosophy, and Law School at Being Is Somethingness.

Andrew Gounardes (1L) blogs under the name of Hamilton Fish, a former United States Senator and Secretary of State to President Grant.  Andrew is a politics and history junkie, with a special interest in the American Civil War and Democratic politics.  His favorite music artists are Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, and Bobby Darin.  When he is not studying law, he spends his time doing more studying, or working on his Scooby Doo impression.  He is originally from Brooklyn (fourth largest city in the U.S. if it wasn’t part of NYC!) and is particularly proud of his hometown borough.  Andrew has a personal website, Learned Musings.

Katie Heckert is thrilled that, as a 1L, she has plenty of extra time to engage in activities including Law Revue, Mock Trial, and being on the editorial board of Sua Sponte.  With her many hours remaining in each week, she enjoys managing the details of her May 10 wedding and buying a condo!  She is considering taking up knitting, water polo, and professional wrestling to help fill the rest of her extra time.

Sai Jahann is, first of all, not a boy.  She’s very good at pretending to blog while actually paying attention in her 1L classes.  She went to college dreaming of creating an artificial heart, but found her real heart in law school.  Sai cares way too much about spelling and grammar, tries to convince people she speaks Farsi by saying “dirka dirka,” and thinks up absurd law school-inspired business ideas.  She has a personal blog, That’s Relevant, which you should totally check out.  Right now.

Treyer Mason-Gale is a 1L at GW Law.  He’s fluent in English, Spanish, and sarcasm and spends his days complaining about the lack of quality Mexican food and the less-than-stellar weather here in DC, as compared to his hometown of San Diego.  When he’s not diligently hilighting his law books, he tears it up on his Wii (certified pro in wii bowling) or watches the San Diego Chargers, Padres, LA Galaxy or University of Arizona sports teams on TV.  He also follows politics and international affairs heavily.  Oh, and his mom thinks he’s a catch.

Liz Westbrook loves to write.  She loves to blog, write songs, and constantly update her gchat status.  All these literary endeavors usually function as distractions from things like writing appellate briefs and journal competition notes.  Liz is also probably from wherever you’re from: hailing from (in longitudinal order) New York, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Los Angeles.  She roots for sports teams in each of those cities, and if Mr. Mason-Gale has a problem with that, well than he should just go write a blog about it!
